Activities

DCS has many unique activities such as Friday Specials, Fall and Winter Events, Spring Camp, and Learning Journeys. DCS also participates in many of Carl Sandburg's activities, such as the annual fund-raisers and after-school activities.

Community Outreach Program

Halloween activitiesCommunity Outreach volunteers plan activities that vary from year-to-year. Some examples of past community outreach activities include volunteering at local food banks, pulling ivy at local parks, beach clean up, etc.


Enrichment Program The enrichment committee plans many activities including learning journeys, visiting specialists, and parent-led lessons from art, tech, and science docents.

Friday Specials Friday Specials are a key component of the Enrichment Program, with parent-led activities involving multi-age groups. Three to five week sessions are planned throughout the school year, and several activity options are available at each session. Some examples of past Friday Specials include: building and racing CO2 cars, performing plays, experiencing the music and culture of The Beatles, cartooning, healthy cooking, "Read to Feed", and cartooning.

Learning Journeys

An educational excursion to enrich the classroom curriculum. DCS parent volunteers are needed to drive and chaperone these learning journeys.

Spring Camp

An annual weekend event for DCS Community members and siblings usually held in May. Structured and non-structured activities include crafts, campfire sing-a-long, open space for outdoor play, hiking, and skits.

Classroom Explorations
An in-class field trip, usually featuring a visiting specialist.
Fall Event
One-day event for DCS families, usually held on a weekend; activities vary by year.
Field Day
Field day is held near the end of the school year. PTSA provides a variety of engaging outdoor activities for the students. The events range from relay races to a water balloon toss. There is a morning and an afternoon session.

Dance Marathon

or Fun Run

A DCS/Sandburg PTSA fundraising event, usually held in October.
Learning Celebration
Learning Celebration is a fall event where all classes share classroom projects with the Community, generally held the day before Thanksgiving.
Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences
Conferences are scheduled for twice a year, in October and January. Every family is encouraged and expected to attend these conferences with their child. The format of these conferences varies between classes. Classroom teachers will provide specific details at Curriculum Night in September.
PNO (Parents Night Out)
A casual social gathering without kids, usually held at a parent's house. PNO's are not sponsored by LWSD, DCS, or the DCS Community Group.
Root Beer Social
An annual kick-off event that takes place the week before school starts. Students have the opportunity to get acquainted with their teachers, peers, and classrooms. During this time, the parents also have a casual meet-and-greet and receive the beginning-of-year paperwork. The event wraps up on the playground with root beer floats being served.
Summer Picnic
A potluck picnic providing an opportunity for new and current families to meet and reconnect, usually held in July.
Winter Event
Evening event for DCS families with Annual Art Show, activities vary by year.
